The Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women welcomed all participants on behalf of the Secretary-General and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General to INSTRAW and emphasized the unique importance of the session, given the current situation affecting the Institute.

In order to assist States to accelerate their actions towards ratification or accession, letters have been sent to those Governments which are not States parties to the Convention (see annex IV) by the Secretary-General and by the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women.
