Al-Haq informed the Mission that a student demonstration at Birzeit on 5 January 2009, which had the stated aim of " showing the occupation forces that Palestinian students reject all aggression against Gaza " , saw a heavy deployment of Palestinian Preventive Security, General Intelligence and Military Intelligence services personnel.

According to research conducted jointly by the Birzeit Women's Studies Institute and the World Bank, higher education is a major factor for employment among both married and unmarried women.
