Mr. Arlacchi (Executive Director of the Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention) announced that the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan had provided detailed information about the opium crop in his country, saying that opium production, consumption and trafficking were prohibited in all areas controlled by the Taliban.

Mr. Arlacchi (Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention), reporting on international drug control, said that the optimism inspired by the determined attitude of the twentieth special session of the General Assembly had been sustained by the action taken.

13. Mr. Bocalandro (Argentina) thanked Mr. Arlacchi for his introductory statement and for the important work done by the Centre for International Crime Prevention under his dynamic leadership.

25. Mr. Arlacchi (Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention), replying to two questions relating to Afghanistan, said that the situation regarding illicit crops had deteriorated, as his Office had predicted two years earlier, owing to insufficient efforts by the international community.
٢٥ - السيد أرلاتشي )وكيل اﻷمين العام والمدير التنفيذي لمكتب مراقبة المخدرات ومنع الجريمة(: رد على السؤالين المتعلقين بأفغانستان فقال إنه فيما يتعلق بالزراعة غير المشروعة، فإن الحالة في هذا البلد قد تدهورت، كما توقع المكتب قبل عامين، لعدم كفاية جهود المجتمع الدولي.

36. Mr. Arlacchi (Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention) said that three countries — Hungary, Lebanon and Romania — had already signed a cooperation agreement with his Office, under which they would work with the Office to find the best means of combating corruption in their countries and at the international level.

43. Mr. Arlacchi (Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention) said that substantial progress had been made during the session of the Ad Hoc Committee on the Elaboration of a Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, particularly with regard to the provisions of the convention concerning extradition and mutual assistance.
