The statement expressed support for the mediation efforts of OAU and commended the efforts of United States Envoy Anthony Lake and the Secretary-General’s decision to send Mohamed Sahnoun, Special Envoy for Africa, on a mission to Eritrea and Ethiopia.

At the 4142nd meeting, held on 12 May 2000 in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations, the Security Council continued its consideration of the item entitled " The situation between Eritrea and Ethiopia " , having before it the report of the Security Council Mission on its visit to Eritrea and Ethiopia on 9 and 10 May 2000 (S/2000/413).

The Security Council resumed its consideration of the item at its 4142nd meeting, held on 12 May 2000, in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations, having before it the report on the Security Council Special Mission visit to Eritrea and Ethiopia on 9 and 10 May 2000 (S/2000/413).

1. On 17 May 2000, acting under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations, the Security Council adopted resolution 1298 (2000) by which, in paragraph 6, it decided that all States should prevent the sale or supply to Eritrea and Ethiopia of arms and related materiel of all types and the provision of technical assistance or training related to the prohibited items.

16. As part of my continued efforts to engage the two parties in the peace process, I dispatched the Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs on a mission to Eritrea and Ethiopia from 27 to 29 August, during which he held consultations with the President of Eritrea and the Prime Minister of Ethiopia on matters pertaining to the peace process, as well as on regional issues.
16 - وفي إطار الجهود المتواصلة التي أبذلها في سبيل حمل الطرفين على الانخراط في عملية السلام، أوفدت وكيل الأمين العام للشؤون السياسية في مهمة إلى إريتريا وإثيوبيا في الفترة من 27 إلى 29 آب/أغسطس، حيث أجرى مشاورات مع رئيس إريتريا ورئيس وزراء إثيوبيا بشأن مسائل تتعلق بالعملية السلمية، إضافة إلى مسائل إقليمية.
