207. During the period under review, the Working Group transmitted nine newly—reported cases to the Government of Morocco, one of which reportedly occurred in 1998.

The fate of the prisoners of war was raised by the Moroccan delegation, which also gave a general account of the status of the 207 presumed political detainees whose names had been submitted by the independent jurist to the Government of Morocco in 1998.

270. During the period under review, the Working Group transmitted one newly reported case to the Government of Morocco, which allegedly occurred in 1997 and was sent under the urgent action procedure.

In Rabat, the Independent Jurist, together with my Acting Special Representative, met with the Moroccan authorities to follow up on an unofficial list containing the names and dates of arrest of alleged Saharan political prisoners, which had been communicated earlier to the Government of Morocco.
وقد اجتمع القانوني المستقل، ومعه ممثلي الخاص بالنيابة، بالسلطات المغربية في الرباط لمتابعة قائمة تتضمن أسماء أشخاص يدعى أنهم سجناء سياسيون صحراويون وتواريخ القبض عليهم. وكانت تلك القائمة قد أبلغت من قبل إلى حكومة المغرب.

20. Following attempts to resolve the issue, my Special Representative addressed a letter to the Government of Morocco on 30 June, stressing that visits by diplomats, staff of non-governmental organizations and journalists directly related to the mandate of MINURSO contribute to the conduct of the Mission's activities and to the transparency of the process.
٠٢ - وفي إثر محاولات لحل هذه المسألة، وجه ممثلي الخاص رسالة إلى حكومة المغرب في ٣٠ حزيران/ يونيه، أكد فيها أن زيارات الدبلوماسيين وموظفي المنظمات غير الحكومية والصحفيين التي تتصل بصورة مباشرة بولاية البعثة من شأنها أن تسهم في تسيير أنشطة البعثة وفي تحقيق شفافية العملية المكلفة بها.

35. The Secretary-General further reported that the Independent Jurist had visited the region in early July and, accompanied by the Acting Special Representative, had met with the Moroccan authorities at Rabat to follow up on an unofficial list containing the names and dates of arrest of alleged Saharan political prisoners that had been communicated earlier to the Government of Morocco.
٣٥ - وأفاد اﻷمين العام كذلك بأن القانوني المستقل قام بزيارة المنطقة في أوائل تموز/يوليه واجتمع، ومعه الممثل الخاص بالنيابة، مع السلطات المغربية في الرباط، لمتابعة قائمة غير رسمية كانت قد أبلغت من قبل إلى حكومة المغرب تضم أسماء أشخاص يدعى أنهم سجناء سياسيون صحراويون، وتواريخ اعتقالهم.

3. He also informed the Security Council that on 8 September, the Independent Jurist, Professor Emmanuel Roucounas, had met with Moroccan officials at Rabat, to seek specific information on a list of 167 alleged political prisoners and detainees, transmitted to the Government of Morocco in January 1997.
٣ - كما أبلغ مجلس اﻷمن بأن المستشار القانوني المستقل، البروفيسور إيمانويل روكوناس، قد اجتمع، في ٨ أيلول/سبتمبر، مع المسؤولين المغاربة في الرباط، طلبا لمعلومات محددة بشأن قائمة تضم ١٦٧ شخصا يُدعى أنهم سجناء ومحتجزون سياسيون، كانت قد أحيلت إلى حكومة المغرب في كانون الثاني/ يناير ١٩٩٧.

On 30 June 1998, his Special Representative had addressed a letter to the Moroccan Government stressing that visits by diplomats, staff of non-governmental organizations and journalists contributed to the conduct of the Mission’s activities and to the transparency of the process.
