2. At its 59th meeting, on 8 May 2000, the Fifth Committee considered a note by the Secretary-General (A/54/102/Add.1) concerning a vacancy in the membership of the Committee on Contributions as a result of the resignation of David Etuket (Uganda).
2 - ونظرت اللجنة الخامسة، في جلستها 59، المعقودة يوم 8 أيار/مايو 2000 في مذكرة من الأمين العام (A/54/102/Add.1) بشأن حدوث شاغر في عضوية لجنة الاشتراكات نتيجة لاستقالة ديفيد إيتوكيت (أوغندا).

71. Mr. Etuket (Chairman of the Committee on Contributions) said that the representative of the Syrian Arab Republic had questioned the rationale for the increase in his country's assessment and had raised the same point in the Committee on Contributions.

35. Mr. Etuket (Uganda) said that he was particularly concerned about the treatment of inflation and endorsed the Advisory Committee's comments in paragraph 19 of its report.

Mr. Etuket (Uganda) pointed out that since the Fifth Committee would be presented later with a consolidated statement of programme budget implications, on the basis of which it could make recommendations to the General Assembly, that should meet the concerns of the delegation of the United States. It should therefore be possible to take immediate action.

51. Mr. Etuket (Uganda), explaining his delegation's position, thanked the delegation of South Africa for its efforts to arrive at a consensus on the draft resolution as orally revised, as well as the delegations that had supported the resolution.

Mr. Etuket (Uganda) asked whether responses had been received from committee chairmen regarding the proposed revisions to the medium-term plan.
