During the past three years, basic family policy priorities have included strengthening social protection among mothers and children, including decreasing the maternal and child mortality rates, and legal provisions to ease the reconciliation of family and professional life for women.

Specific measures and projects for sensitizing Bulgarian society to the problems of equality and for reconciling family and professional life are implemented within the framework of the implementation of the National Action Plan for Employment, which the government has been adopting annually over the last eight years.

The basic goal was the reconciliation between family and professional life for men and women through: the provision of counselling and support services to employees who are responsible for dependent members, the removal of stereotypes on gender roles within the family and the promotion of new standards for labour organization aiming at the reconciliation of target groups' family and professional lives.

Open Doors: its main target was to identify ways to accommodate women to enter, remain or re-enter the active workforce and facilitating a balance by removing barriers that were related to the conflict between family and working life.

30. There is wide recognition of the need to increase the participation of men in domestic work and family responsibilities by adopting family support policies and encouraging the reconciliation of family and working life for both men and women. Men as well as women suffer negative consequences from work/life imbalances and have much to gain from better contact with children and participation in family life.

Convention No. 156: In its 1999 direct request, the Committee noted with interest that, according to the Government's report, the Bill to promote the reconciliation of the family life and professional life of workers, which will adapt the legislative framework to the need to reconcile work and family responsibilities in modern society, was being examined by the Parliament.
