In recent years, it has ratified the Treaty of Pelindaba, which established the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone.

In that regard, we call for the ratification of the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty -- the Treaty of Pelindaba -- by the required number of States so that it can enter into force without further delay.

These demand a reasonable energy mix, including the exploration of nuclear power, as part of the benefits Nigeria can derive from the Agency, while being fully conscious of our unequivocal commitment to the spirit and letter of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Treaty of Pelindaba on the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone.

In that context, I call for renewed efforts to ensure the earliest entry into force of the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (Pelindaba Treaty).

Participants had also expressed support for the Secretary-General's five-point proposal on nuclear disarmament; welcomed the entry into force of the Central Asian nuclear-weapon-free zone and the imminent entry into force of the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone; and considered the possibility of requesting the Secretary-General to prepare an updated comprehensive study of the question of nuclear-weapon-free zones in all its aspects.
