From 14 to 18 May 2007, at a summit in Sao Tome and Principe on peace and security in Central Africa to which the Centre was invited, it was decided to encourage the pursuit of effective partnership between the United Nations and ECCAS.

The cooperation between the United Nations and ECCAS is being strengthened despite a subregional geopolitical environment marked by the persistence of the war in Angola, the emergence of new fronts of instability in the Central African Republic and the constant threat of the regionalization of the conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which could have hindered subregional economic integration.

In a lively exchange of views, member States reaffirmed the need for the Committee to strengthen relations with the Security Council, and in particular with the Ad Hoc Working Group on Conflict Prevention and Resolution in Africa, expressed approval for keeping in place the current Committee secretariat and encouraged closer cooperation between the United Nations and ECCAS in areas of common interest.

Despite the absence of sustained institutional interaction between the United Nations and ECCAS during much of the Community's existence, the Organization worked closely with ECCAS member States, both individually and jointly, in a number of critical areas, including efforts to restore subregional confidence-building and cooperation and to promote peace and reconstruction.
