The revitalization of the regional seas programmes of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has been a step in the direction of the promotion of the integrated management and sustainable development of coastal areas.

In addition, cooperation and coordination at the national, regional and global levels is necessary to supplement the efforts of States in promoting the implementation of the Convention as well as the integrated management and sustainable development of the oceans and seas.
