International standards for exchanging geospatial and temporal data have been in development since the early 1990s, mainly through the work of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee 211 on geographic information and geomatics, the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) and the Unicode Consortium.
