For example, article IX of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and article 22 of the Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic of Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others provide that disputes between the Contracting Parties relating to the interpretation, application or fulfilment of those Conventions shall be submitted to the Court at the request of any of the parties to the dispute.

In all ten cases it invoked as a basis of the Court's jurisdiction Article IX of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 9 December 1948 ( " the Genocide Convention " ).

In that Judgment (see above, para. 130), the Court rejected the preliminary objections raised by Yugoslavia and found that it had jurisdiction to deal with the case on the basis of Article IX of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, dismissing the additional bases of jurisdiction invoked by Bosnia and Herzegovina.

However, the Court considered that it had to examine whether on that date the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was bound by article IX of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide of 1948 (Genocide Convention), on which Croatia bases the jurisdiction of the Court.

On 11 July, the Court delivered its Judgment, rejecting, by 14 votes to 1, the preliminary objections raised by Yugoslavia (except for the fifth preliminary objection, which was rejected by 11 votes to 4), and finding, by 13 votes to 2, that it had jurisdiction to deal with the case on the basis of article IX of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
