UNITAR has been invited by the Government of Mali, the Economic Commission for Africa and the International Telecommunications Union to contribute to the African regional preparatory Meeting for the WSIS, which was held in Bamako in May 2002.

24. The African regional preparatory Meeting of the United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management Initiative recommended the development of an African action plan.

The closing ceremony of the African regional preparatory meeting included speeches by Mr. Nikhil Seth, Director of the Office for Economic and Social Council Support and Coordination; Professor Jean-Pierre Ezin, Commissioner for Human Resources, Science and Technology of the African Union; and Ms. Essossimna Legzim-Balouki, Minister of Literacy and Primary and Secondary Education in Togo.

It is my pleasure to transmit the report of the African regional preparatory meeting on women and health, held in Dakar on 12 and 13 January 2010, for the 2010 annual ministerial review held by the Economic and Social Council and to request that the report be circulated as a document of the Council for consideration at its substantive session of 2010, under item 2 (c) of the provisional agenda (see annex).
