The 143 votes in the General Assembly at the current session in favour of lifting the embargo against Cuba were an eloquent testimony to the international community’s abhorrence of such practices, and in that connection she expressed the hope that the Second Committee would give resounding support to the draft resolution against economic measures as a means of coercion that would be submitted to it by the Group of 77 and China.

The Group of 77 and China stress that the mandates derived from General Assembly resolutions 44/215, 46/210 and 48/168, regarding the use of economic measures as a means of exerting political and economic pressure against developing countries, should be incorporated in subprogramme 1 of programme 11 and, in this regard, would also make reference to the note of the Secretary-General regarding the implementation of resolution 46/210.
