13. In accordance with the provisions of decision 1/COP.5 and the timetable outlined in paragraphs 13 to 15 of decision 11/COP.1, the third session of the CRIC 3 focused on implementation in Africa.

1. Requests the Secretariat to continue its collaboration with the secretariat of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment and the secretariat of the New Partnership for Africa's Development with a view to strengthening the development of concerted approaches for the further implementation in Africa of the Basel Declaration on Environmentally Sound Management and the Strategic Plan for the implementation of the Basel Convention;

17. The activities of the subprogramme for facilitation of implementation in Africa in the biennium 2004-2005 are described in paragraphs 18 to 20 below (US$ 2,990,000).

That is why I would like to commend Ted Turner's United Nations Foundation initiative, which is working with Lutheran and Methodist organizations to provide $200 million to fight malaria in Africa, and the Secretary-General's work to scale up implementation in Africa by identifying MDG financing gaps, in partnership with all stakeholders.

Close cooperation between the Secretariat, the four BCRCs in Africa (Egypt, Nigeria, Senegal and South Africa) and their host Governments led to the preparation of several project proposals that support the further implementation in Africa of the Basel Declaration on Environmentally Sound Management and the Strategic Plan for the Implementation of the Basel Convention.
