The solemn opening of this session provides me with an opportunity to again express my deep gratitude, both for the tribute that has been paid to Africa and for the confidence that has been placed in my country, Gabon, its people and the initiatives of its President, His Excellency El Hadj Omar Bongo Ondimba.

On behalf of the African Group, I would like to take this opportunity to express our deep condolences to the Government and the people of Gabon on the loss of President El Hadj Omar Bongo Ondimba.

It is a parliamentary democracy, based on respect for the principle of separation of powers (executive, legislative and judiciary branches), with a presidential system. The president is El Hadj Omar Bongo Ondimba.

Ndiaye (Gabon) (spoke in French): At this time of deep mourning for the people of Gabon and for all of Africa, we wish to express our profound gratitude to the representatives of the various regional groups and to the Member States who have taken the floor during this plenary meeting to pay such a vibrant tribute to the late President El Hadj Omar Bongo Ondimba.

Since the adoption of that strategic document, Gabon, with the personal commitment of our President, El Hadj Omar Bongo Ondimba, and his wife, Dr. Edith Lucie Bongo Ondimba, has undertaken a number of actions to combat HIV/AIDS, the most important of which is the national Therapeutic Solidarity Fund, established in 2002, which has made it possible to provide treatment to 6,000 people living with HIV.
منذ اعتماد تلك الوثيقة الاستراتيجية، اضطلعت غابون، مع الالتزام الشخصي من جانب رئيسنا الحاج عمر بونغو أونديمبا وزوجته الدكتورة إديث لوسي بونغو أونديمبا، بعدد من الإجراءات لمكافحة فيروس نقص المناعة البشرية/الإيدز، وكان أهم هذه الإجراءات إنشاء صندوق التضامن العلاجي الوطني في عام 2002 الذي أتاح إمكانية توفير العلاج لعدد 000 6 شخص مصابين بفيروس نقص المناعة البشرية.
