It is therefore important that the plan of action to be adopted by the Conference and the review of chapter 5 be harmonized to prevent an unnecessary duplicative process in the review of commitments in the area of demographic dynamics and sustainability.

12. At the 20th meeting, on 3 May, the Commission had before it a draft decision (E/CN.17/1996/L.1) entitled " demographic dynamics and sustainability " , which was submitted by the Chairman.

83. The Commission on Sustainable Development takes note of the report of the Secretary-General on demographic dynamics and sustainability (E/CN.17/1995/15), including the proposals for action contained therein.

25. Under the critical dimensions of sustainable development, a special focus will be given in 1995 to chapter 5 of Agenda 21 (demographic dynamics and sustainability).
٢٥ - وفي ظل اﻷبعاد الحاسمة للتنمية المستدامة، سيجري التركيز بوجه خاص في عام ١٩٩٥ على الفصل ٥ من جدول أعمال القرن ٢١ )الديناميات الديمغرافية والاستدامة(.

4. The transition to sustainability will depend crucially on an international economy that supports key environment and development goals, effective steps against poverty (particularly in developing countries), changes in consumption patterns and measures to ensure compatibility between demographic dynamics and sustainability.
٤ - سيعتمد التحول الى الاستدامة اعتمادا حاسما على اقتصاد دولي يدعم أهدافا بيئية وانمائية أساسية، واجراءات فعالة لمكافحة الفقر )لا سيما في البلدان النامية(، وتغييرات في أنماط الاستهلاك وتدابير لكفالة الاتساق بين الديناميات الديمغرافية والاستدامة.

INTRODUCTION 1. This report reviews progress made in the implementation of the objectives set out in chapter 5 of Agenda 21 (demographic dynamics and sustainability),1 taking into account the decisions taken by the Commission on Sustainable Development on this subject at its third and fourth sessions.
١ - يستعرض هذا التقرير التقدم الذي حدث في تنفيذ اﻷهداف التي أعلنت في الفصل ٥ من جدول أعمال القرن ٢١ )الديناميات الديمغرافية والاستدامة()١( مع مراعاة القرارات التي اتخذتها لجنة التنمية المستدامة بشأن هذا الموضوع في دورتيها الثالثة والرابعة.

As Task Manager for chapter 5 of Agenda 21 (demographic dynamics and sustainability), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) prepared reports for the Commission on Sustainable Development at its third and fourth sessions on progress being made in the implementation of the aims set out in the chapter.
