The Convention on the Rights of the Child also specifies that States parties may not allow a sentence of life imprisonment without possibility of release to be imposed for offences committed by persons below 18 years of age (art. 37 (a)).

(ب) أن تخفف هذه العقوبات على الفور وأن تكفل نقل أي طفل حكم عليه سابقا بعقوبة الإعدام أو السجن مدى الحياة دون إمكانية الإفراج من مرافق السجن الخاصة، ولا سيما من مرافق سجن المحكوم عليهم بالإعدام، إلى مؤسسات احتجاز عادية تناسب سنه والجرم المرتكب؛
