As we review the state of our world today, it appears abundantly evident that the tragic legacy and consequences of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade remain with us, especially the continued political, social and economical impact.

This year, on 25 March, the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade was commemorated for the first time.

The establishment of the permanent memorial will significantly serve as a tangible contribution by the international community to partially implement paragraph 101 of the Durban Declaration, which, inter alia, invites the international community to honour the memory of the victims of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade.
وستكون إقامة النصب التذكاري الدائم، إلى حد بعيد، إسهاما ملموسا للمجتمع الدولي في تنفيذ جزئي للفقرة 101 من إعلان ديربان، الذي يدعو المجتمع الدولي، في جملة أمور، إلى إكرام ذكرى ضحايا العبودية وتجارة الرقيق عبر المحيط الأطلسي.

It is therefore against that backdrop that we would urge all delegations to consider the profound significance of the draft resolution, which seeks to honour and restore some level of dignity to the victims of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade, when taking into account any other attendant considerations relevant to the adoption of the draft resolution.
وعليه، وفي ضوء هذه الخلفية، نحث جميع الوفود على أن تنظر في المغزى العميق لمشروع القرار، الذي يسعى إلى تكريم ضحايا العبودية وتجارة الرقيق عبر المحيط الأطلسي واسترداد بعض من كرامتهم، وذلك عند مراعاة أي اعتبارات أخرى تتصل باعتماد مشروع القرار.

33. It is also to be noted that Jamaica and other Caribbean Community and Common Market countries initiated a project for the erection of a permanent memorial at the United Nations in New York to acknowledge the tragedy of slavery and to honour victims of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade.

We will continue to insist that slavery and the transatlantic slave trade be declared crimes against humanity and that the descendants of the victims of those criminal practices, colonialism and the genocidal exploitation of indigenous peoples be given the reparations and compensation they deserve as an outstanding measure of historical justice.
وسنواصل الإصرار على أن تعلَن العبودية وتجارة الرقيق عبر المحيط الأطلسي جرائم ضد الإنسانية وعلى أن يُمنح المنحدرون من أصلاب ضحايا تلك الممارسات الإجرامية والاستعمار والاستغلال إلى درجة الإبادة الجماعية للشعوب الأصلية ما يستحقونه من جبر الضرر والتعويض، باعتبار ذلك إجراء ما زال منتظرا من إجراءات العدالة التاريخية.
