In light of the forthcoming review of the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), in 2004, the continued assistance of the subregional office, which served as secretariat for the Programme of Action, was vital.

٩ - تطلب كذلك إلى الوكالات المتخصصة أن تأخذ في اعتبارها برنامج العمل المعني بالتنمية المستدامة للدول الجزرية الصغيرة النامية، الذي اعتمده المؤتمر العالمي بشأن التنمية المستدامة للدول الجزرية الصغيرة النامية)٦( وخصوصا تطبيقه على اﻷقاليم الجزرية الصغيرة غير المتمتعة بالحكم الذاتي؛

Regarding the follow-up of Agenda 21, it welcomed the progress recently achieved on the elaboration of an international convention to combat desertification in those countries experiencing serious drought and/or desertification, particularly in Africa, and the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States.

7 - الإسراع بخطى متابعة المقررات والتوصيات الصادرة عن المؤتمرات العالمية ذات الصلة بالبلدان الجزرية الصغيرة النامية على الصُعد الوطنية ودون الإقليمية والإقليمية، خصوصا برنامج العمل المعني بالتنمية المستدامة للدول الجزرية الصغيرة النامية وتنفيذ الأهداف الإنمائية للألفية.

The need to also address the special circumstances of small island developing States was recognized in the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States, adopted at the Global Conference on the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States, held in Barbados in 1994, which was subsequently reviewed in Mauritius in January 2005.
