The secretariat has prepared, for the eighth session of the SBSTA, a progress report onthe ongoing methodological work related to, inter alia, greenhouse gas emission inventories (FCCC/SBSTA/1998/4).

It also invites discussion on the need for consideration of the possible timing and nature of further steps, taking into account the ongoing methodological work and submissions from Parties, as well as actions required under the Kyoto Protocol.
كما تدعو المذكرة إلى مناقشة ضرورة النظر في التوقيت الممكن للتدابير التي قد تتخذ في المستقبل وفي طبيعتها الممكنة، مع مراعاة العمل المنهجي الجاري والعروض الواردة من اﻷطراف، وكذلك اﻹجراءات اللازم اتخاذها بموجب بروتوكول كيوتو.

It also endorsed the action plan for the implementation of the Framework in countries and the establishment of an expert group on environment statistics, and emphasized the need to support the revised Framework with detailed methodological guidance and training materials that build upon existing methodological resources, where available, and that are coordinated with ongoing methodological work in related fields of statistics.

The SBSTA concluded that the future implementation of the Convention and the Kyoto Protocol, and the future elaboration of the climate change process in pursuing the ultimate objective of the Convention, taking into account principles and relevant provisions of the Convention, would benefit from further consideration of ongoing methodological work and from the development of a strategic approach to future methodological work;
