72. Given the prevailing security conditions, which require the robust interposition role currently played by the French forces, and taking into account the fact that the government of national reconciliation is only beginning to take shape, the assessment mission was of the opinion that, at this stage, the United Nations should consider playing a role that would complement the operations of the French and ECOWAS forces.

103. Although Côte d'Ivoire was pleased that the Security Council, through its resolution 1514 (2003), had renewed the mandate of the United Nations Mission in Côte d'Ivoire, that Mission had no direct peacekeeping role and the mandates of the French and ECOWAS troops in the country were themselves restricted.
103 - ومع أنه كان من دواعي سرور كوت ديفوار قيام مجلس الأمن من خلال قراره 1514 (2003)، بتحديد ولاية بعثة الأمم المتحدة في كوت ديفوار، لم يكن لتلك البعثة دور مباشر في حفظ السلام وكانت ولايات القوات الفرنسية وقوات الجماعة الاقتصادية لدول غرب أفريقيا ذاتهما في البلد مقيدة.

59. The presence of the Licorne and ECOWAS forces remains indispensable if the prevailing, albeit fragile, stability is to be sustained.
