Efforts are also under way, with support from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), to revive Working Group II, on refugees and internally displaced persons.

At the request of my Special Representative, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) carried out consultations with the Georgian and Abkhaz sides to explore the possibility of reanimating Working Group II on refugees and internally displaced persons, within the framework of the Coordinating Council.

In his country, where 300,000 refugees and displaced persons had sought refuge from persecution and ethnic cleansing in Abkhazia, UNHCR efforts to encourage Working Group II on refugees and internally displaced persons of the Georgia/Abkhazia Coordinating Council to ensure that the parties to the conflict signed a protocol on the return of refugees and displaced persons represented a step in the right direction.
