The arrangement under the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) (hereafter " FAO International Treaty " ) was cited as an example of multilateral benefit-sharing that included the possibility of monetary and non-monetary benefits, such as the funding of research projects and access to samples.

The Summit had underscored the critical role of biodiversity in sustainable development, poverty reduction and cultural integrity and had called for a significant reduction, by 2010, in the loss of biodiversity, inviting countries that had not yet done so to ratify the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.
