1. The mandate on the situation of human rights in Myanmar was established in 1992 by the Commission on Human Rights in its resolution 1992/58 and extended by the Human Rights Council in its decision 1/102 and resolution 5/1.

In this context, the Special Rapporteur would like to welcome the decision of the Council, at its fifth session in June 2007 to extend the mandate on the situation of human rights in Myanmar.

It was in favour of using all sources of information on the human rights situation in a given country, but felt that such sources must be available to all interested parties, including the State party about which information was being provided.

To this end, the unit searches for and classifies relevant international instruments for use in the lawmaking process, makes arrangements for the review of bills and draft regulations by foreign experts, and regularly updates the relevant international organizations on the human rights situation in the field of health care.

The Committee notes from recent reports on the human rights situation in Sri Lanka that, although efforts have been made to eradicate torture, instances of torture continue to be reported, and that complaints of torture are often not dealt with effectively by police, magistrates and doctors.
وتلاحظ اللجنة من التقارير الأخيرة المتعلقة بحالة حقوق الإنسان في سري لانكا أنه رغم الجهود المبذولة للقضاء على مشكلة التعذيب، لا تزال هناك حالات تعذيب وأن رجال الشرطة والقضاة والأطباء لا يعالجون الشكاوى من التعذيب بفعالية في كثير من الأحيان.

In this connection, the Committee takes note of reports regarding the human rights situation in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, including alleged discrimination against certain minorities such as the Amerindians and Asians.
