In response to the danger posed by mercury pollution, the UNEP Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum agreed, in February 2009, on a process and timetable for the negotiation of a global, legally binding instrument to reduce the risks to human health and the environment arising from worldwide emission and discharges of mercury.
