In its resolution 8/14 of 8 May 1985, the Commission on Human Settlements and, in its decision 13/12 of 23 May 1985, the Governing Council of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) decided to include in their respective agendas for future sessions an item on cooperation between their two organizations and to discuss the item on the basis of a progress report prepared jointly by their respective Executive Directors.

A high-level meeting to be chaired by the two Executive Directors is scheduled for the first quarter of 2013 with the objectives of: (a) reviewing and assessing cooperation; (b) exploring how the two partners could better contribute to each other's work; (c) agreeing on next steps for enhanced cooperation through certain defined strategic areas.
