The Centre, as a consequence of efforts over the past year, had made great progress in overcoming past deficiencies, and he called on the Commission to give favourable consideration to the revitalization measures proposed by the Acting Executive Director and to ensure that the Centre had sufficient financial resources to move forward.

3. Commends the Acting Executive Director of the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements (Habitat) on the establishment of the Gender Unit in November 1998;
٣ - تثني على المدير التنفيذي باﻹنابة لمركز اﻷمم المتحدة للمستوطنات البشرية )الموئل( لقيامه بإنشاء وحدة لشؤون الجنسين في تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر ٨٩٩١؛

4. Requests the Acting Executive Director to ensure that both the Gender Unit and the Women and Habitat Programme are equipped, with immediate effect and within available resources, to meet the challenges of effectively implementing the new strategic vision;
٤ - تطلب كذلك إلى المدير التنفيذي باﻹنابة التأكد من تزويد كل من وحدة شؤون الجنسين وبرنامج المرأة والموئل، وبأسرع ما يمكن، وفي حدود الموارد المتاحة، بما يلزم من موارد لمواجهة التحديات المتمثلة في التنفيذ الفعال للرؤية الاستراتيجية الجديدة؛

In the statement, the Acting Executive Director noted that the seventeenth session of the Commission had seen the inclusion of a number of new elements in its working style and the beginnings of a more intensive and positive dialogue with partners, especially the local authorities and women, children, youth, academia and trade unions. The Commission had committed itself to giving a revitalized Centre a new start.

Welcomes the steps taken by the Acting Executive Director of the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements to strengthen the capacity of the Centre, in particular the normative area, and to improve the linkages between the normative and operational activities of the Centre so as to enable it to effectively exercise its vital role as focal point for the implementation of the Habitat Agenda;5
