The report of the workshop will be made available to the twentieth session of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations in July 2002.

At national, regional and international levels, the perspectives of indigenous people have gained increasing recognition, as reflected, inter alia, in the presence of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, and the proclamation by the General Assembly of the year 1993 as the International Year of the World's Indigenous People.

78. Echoing Chief Seattle, one Indian leader stated to the Working Group on Indigenous Populations at its 1985 session:

Requests the Special Rapporteur to prepare her final working paper on the basis of the comments and information received from Governments, indigenous peoples and others and to submit it to the Working Group on Indigenous Populations at its seventeenth session and to the Sub—Commission at its fifty—first session;

With a view to hearing the views of the largest number of interested parties, consultations were held during the seventeenth session of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations in July 1999.

The Group also strongly supported the organization of a workshop on indigenous children, to be held at Geneva prior to the session of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations in 2000, and recommended a grant of up to US$ 23,000 to assist the participation of representatives from indigenous communities and organizations in the workshop.

28. The Working Group has collaborated with the Sub-Commission's Working Group on Indigenous Populations in organizing three subregional seminars in Africa: one for West Africa in Kidal, Mali; a second for Central and Southern Africa in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania; and a third in Gaborone, Botswana.
28- ولقد تعاون الفريق العامل مع نظيره التابع للجنة الفرعية المعني بالسكان الأصليين في تنظيم ثلاث حلقات دراسية دون إقليمية في أفريقيا: عقدت الأولى في كيدال بمالي وعَنيت بمنطقة غرب أفريقيا؛ وعقدت الثانية في أروشا بتنزانيا وعَنيت بمنطقة أفريقيا الوسطى والجنوبية، ونظمت الثالثة في غابورون ببوتسوانا.

Ms. Slimane, an independent expert, introduced the working paper (E/CN.4/Sub.2/AC.5/2001/WP.2) that she had presented to the workshop on multiculturalism in Africa organized by the Working Group on Minorities and the Working Group on Indigenous Populations in Kidal, Mali, in January 2001.

The international programme is conducted annually at the time of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations held at the United Nations in Geneva.
