1. The present document contains the summary by the President of the fifty-sixth session of the General Assembly of the meeting of the General Assembly devoted to information and communication technologies for development which took place at Headquarters on 17 and 18 June 2002.
1 - تتضمن هذه الوثيقة موجزا مقدما من رئيس الجمعية العامة للدورة السادسة والخمسين عن اجتماع الجمعية العامة المكرس لتسخير تكنولوجيات المعلومات والاتصالات من أجل التنمية الذي عُقد في المقر في 17 و 18 حزيران/يونيه 2002.

6. The theme of the meeting devoted to information and communication technologies for development was considered to be particularly important and timely in the context of the information revolution and it emphasized the urgent need for digital divide-bridging strategies.
6 - ويعتبر موضوع الاجتماع المكرس لتسخير تكنولوجيات المعلومات والاتصالات لأغراض التنمية موضوعا هاما على وجه الخصوص وتوقيته مناسب في سياق ثورة المعلومات، وركّز على الضرورة المُلحّة لوجود استراتيجيات لسد الفجوة في التكنولوجيا الرقمية.

The momentum generated by the Millennium Summit has been preserved through major United Nations meetings on development held in and outside New York, such as the International Conference on Financing for Development, in March; the meeting of the General Assembly devoted to information and communication technologies for development, in June; and the World Summit on Sustainable Development, held earlier this month.

Against this backdrop, the high-level meeting devoted to ICT for development, held at the United Nations in June 2002, was an important forum to reaffirm the multi-stakeholder approach of Member States, the private sector, civil society and the United Nations, all of which have a role to play in bridging the digital divide within and among countries.

Mr. Escanero (Mexico) (spoke in Spanish): My delegation welcomes the introduction of document A/57/280, entitled " Meeting of the General Assembly devoted to information and communication technologies for development -- Summary by the President of the fifty-sixth session of the General Assembly " .

Referring to the summary by the President of the fifty-sixth session of the General Assembly on the meeting of the General Assembly devoted to information and communication technologies for development (A/57/280), he said that OIC agreed that the United Nations was uniquely placed to provide the normative policy framework for addressing the challenges of information and communication technology policies.
7 - وأشار إلى الموجز الذي أعده رئيس الدورة السادسة والخمسين للجمعية العامة بشأن اجتماع الجمعية العامة المكرس لتسخير تكنولوجيات المعلومات والاتصالات لأغراض التنمية (A/57/280)، وقال إن منظمة المؤتمر الإسلامي توافق في أن الأمم المتحدة تتمتع بمركز فريد يمكنها من توفير إطار لمعايير سياسة للتصدي لتحديات سياسات تكنولوجيات المعلومات والاتصالات.
