In November 2011, the Authority participated in the Western South Pacific regional workshop to facilitate the description of ecologically or biologically significant marine areas, which identified 26 areas meeting ecologically or biologically significant areas criteria.

118. Ecologically or biologically significant marine areas in need of protection. Pursuant to decision X/29 of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, regional workshops on the identification of ecologically or biologically significant marine areas were held in 2012 for the Wider Caribbean and Western Mid-Atlantic Region, the Southern Indian Ocean Region and the Eastern Pacific and Temperate Tropical Region.
