The operation of the SILVER II process at atmospheric pressure and relatively low temperature precludes the formation of unintentionally produced POPs during the treatment process (Turner 2001; Vijgen 2002).

It is important to note that hexachlorobenzene (HCB) may be considered a POPs pesticide and an industrial chemical and can also be an unintentionally produced POP.

(c) Wastes containing or contaminated with unintentionally produced polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), hexachlorobenzene (HCB) or polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs);

These might include, for example, actual users of POPs pesticides, to aid understanding of the extent of the needs (real or perceived) and the way that such substances are used and stored, and industry representatives, who could provide realistic information relevant to assessing likely sources of unintentionally produced POPs.

Carry out a review of the findings of the POP pesticide assessment (Annex 2), the PCB assessment (Annex 3) and the unintentionally produced chemicals assessment (Annex 4) and other information gathered against the criteria developed above.

Decision SC-1/19 welcomed the draft guidelines and provisional guidance as contained in document UNEP/POPS/COP.1/INF/7 and encouraged Parties to take the draft guidelines and provisional guidance into consideration, where practicable and feasible, in the development of action plans and other activities related to unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants.
