2. The Central Asian Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty was the first nuclear-weapon-free zone agreement to have been proposed since the opening for signature of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty and the adoption of additional protocols to the safeguards agreements with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Kazakhstan, along with other countries of the region, has been instrumental in the creation of the Central Asian Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone, which came into force on 21 March 2009, and plays a key role in strengthening regional and international peace and security arrangements.
