The flows of people leaving North Africa in response to recent events are often termed " mixed flows " , in that they include people with various motivations and protection profiles, including refugees and asylum-seekers, unaccompanied and separated children, victims of trafficking, irregular migrants and smuggled migrants.

More efficient informants in smuggling of migrants cases are either smuggled migrants, criminals involved in the smuggling of migrants or persons who offer services (e.g. employees or owners of travel agencies, transport companies, hotels and guesthouses, telecommunication shops or translation services) that could be used by smugglers and/or smuggled migrants.
