With regard to the areas of the coastal oil deposit and the mainland coastal oil trench, the Panel observes that the evidence available shows that the areas are almost devoid of plant and animal life.
171- وفيما يتعلق بمناطق ترسبات النفط الساحلية وخندق النفط الساحلي الرئيسي يلاحظ الفريق أن الأدلة المتاحة تبين أن هذه المناطق تكاد تكون خالية من أي حياة نباتية أو حيوانية.

Kuwait proposes to undertake remediation measures for the weathered oil layers similar to those proposed for the coastal oil deposit and coastal oil trench described in paragraph .
178- وتقترح الكويت الاضطلاع بتدابير لإصلاح طبقات النفط التي تعرضت للتجوية شبيهة بالتدابير المقترحة لترسيبات النفط الساحلية وخندق النفط الساحلي والمذكورة في الفقرة 177.

The Panel considers that proposed excavation of visibly contaminated material in the areas of the coastal oil deposit and mainland coastal oil trench is reasonable. The Panel also considers that landfilling of the excavated material is a reasonable disposal option.
182- ويرى الفريق أن الحفر المقترح للمادة بادية التلوث في مناطق ترسبات النفط الساحلية وخندق النفط الساحلي الرئيسي أمر معقول، كما يعتبر أن ملء الحفر بالمادة المستخرجة خيار معقول للتخلص منها.

8. With regard to the areas of the coastal oil deposit and the mainland coastal oil trench, the Panel observed that the evidence available showed that the areas were almost devoid of plant and animal life.

9. Kuwait proposed to excavate visibly contaminated areas of the coastal oil deposit and coastal oil trenches and to treat the excavated material with high temperature thermal desorption.
9 - واقترحت الكويت حفر المناطق الواضح تلوثها بترسيبات النفط الساحلية وخنادق النفط الساحلية، ومعالجة المادة المستخرجة بالمج بالحرارة المرتفعة.

10. The Panel considered that proposed excavation of visibly contaminated material in the areas of the coastal oil deposit and mainland coastal oil trench was reasonable and that landfilling of the excavated material was also a reasonable disposal option.
10 - ورأى الفريق أن الحفر المقترح للمادة الواضح تلوثها في مناطق ترسبات النفط الساحلية وخندق النفط الساحلي الرئيسي أمر معقول، كما اعتبر أن دفن المادة المستخرجة خيار معقول للتخلص منها.

Kuwait states that the mainland coastal oil trench, located in the supratidal zone near Subiyah in North Kuwait Bay, together with related coastal oil deposits, contains an estimated 8,319 cubic metres of contaminated material, while the Bubiyan Island coastal oil trench contains an estimated 30 cubic metres of contaminated material.
164- وتذكر الكويت أن خندق النفط الساحلي الرئيسي، الواقع في منطقة المد قرب سوبية شمال خليج الكويت وما يتصل به من ترسبات النفط الساحلية تقدر ب319 8 متراً مكعباً من المادة الملوثة في حين يحوي خندق النفط الساحلي في جزيرة بوبيان 30 متراً مكعباً من المادة الملوثة.

Kuwait proposes to excavate visibly contaminated areas of the coastal oil deposit and coastal oil trenches and to treat the excavated material with high temperature thermal desorption ( " HTTD " ). Kuwait proposes to utilize the HTTD plants that it intends to construct for the remediation of damage covered by another of its claims.
177- وتقترح الكويت حفر المناطق واضحة التلوث في ترسيبات النفط الساحلية وخنادق النفط الساحلية، ومعالجة المادة المستخرجة بالمج بالحرارة المرتفعة وتقترح الكويت استخدام مصانع المج الحراري المرتفع التي تعتزم بناءها لإصلاح الضرر الذي تغطيه مطالبة أخرى من مطالباتها(37).

In situ bioremediation of residual contamination at the sites of the coastal oil deposit and oil trenches is not warranted in the circumstances because residual contamination levels after excavation are likely to be low, and excavated areas can be backfilled with clean soil. For excavated weathered oil layers, raking or tilling of exposed soils would be adequate for any limited contamination that may be identified after excavation.
4- وليس الإصلاح البيولوجي في الموقع لمخلفات التلوث في مواقع ترسبات النفط الساحلية وخنادق النفط لازماً في هذه الظروف لأن الأرجح أن تكون مستويات مخلفات التلوث بعد الحفر منخفضة، ويمكن سد المناطق المحفورة بتربة نظيفة، وبالنسبة لطبقات النفط التي تعرضت للتجوية بعد حفرها فإن تمشيط التربة المكشوفة أو حرثها سيكون كافياً لمعالجة أي تلوث محدود يمكن تحديده بعد الحفر.

Kuwait states that biomarker analysis of samples taken from the coastal oil deposit area, the mainland coastal oil trench and two areas of weathered oil layers, compared to biomarker data of samples taken from some inland oil fields remaining from Iraqi destruction of oil wells, shows that the contamination in these areas resulted directly from Iraq's invasion and occupation of Kuwait.
166- وذكرت الكويت أن تحليل العلامات البيولوجية للعينات من منطقة ترسبات النفط الساحلية وخندق النفط الساحلي ومنطقتين من طبقات النفط التي تعرضت للتجوية، بالمقارنة ببيانات العلامات البيولوجية للعينات المأخوذة من بعض حقول النفط الداخلية المتبقية من تدمير العراق لآبار النفط تبين أن التلوث في هذه المناطق ناشئ مباشرة عن غزو العراق واحتلاله للكويت(36).
