The view was also expressed that the level of resources proposed in the study of the ad hoc expert group needed a review in the light of the potential for existing international and national activities to provide or support some of the functions of the proposed entity.

6. While expressing its appreciation for the role and functions of the proposed entity, the Subcommittee agreed that its creation should not lead to duplication of efforts and that close consultation was required between the ad hoc expert group and other organizations that had ongoing initiatives in the use of space technology for disaster management.
6- وفيما أعربت اللجنة الفرعية عن تقديرها لدور الهيئة المقترحة ووظائفها، اتفقت في الوقت ذاته على أن إنشاءها لا ينبغي أن يفضي إلى ازدواجية في الجهود المبذولة، وأن ذلك يقتضي التشاور الوثيق بين فريق الخبراء المخصّص وسائر المنظمات التي لها مبادرات جارية في مجال استعمال تكنولوجيا الفضاء في إدارة الكوارث.

28. The ad hoc expert group recommended to the Committee that the proposed entity be implemented as a programme of the Office for Outer Space Affairs and that the entity be launched on 1 January 2007.
28- وأوصى الفريق اللجنة بأن تُنشأ الهيئة المقترحة بوصفها برنامجا تابعا لمكتب شؤون الفضاء الخارجي وأن ينطلق عملها في 1 كانون الثاني/يناير 2007.

5. The Office for Outer Space Affairs provided an overview of the planned activities of the proposed entity and discussed the activities that could potentially be carried out together with or within GEOSS.
5- وقدّم مكتب شؤون الفضاء الخارجي عرضا عاما حول الأنشطة المقرّر أن تضطلع بها الهيئة المقترحة وناقش الأنشطة التي يمكن الاضطلاع بها بالتعاون مع جيوس أو داخل نطاقها.

The view was expressed that the overall approach towards establishing the proposed entity not only should address post-disaster issues, but also should be aimed more at identifying the technology elements that would help in disaster prediction and prevention.

The representative of the Office, on behalf of the ad hoc expert group, met with the representative of UNOSAT in Geneva, on 23 March 2006, to identify possible common activities and synergies that might be included in the workplan of the proposed entity, in order to build upon them further.
