Following the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action in 1995,1 and in accordance with General Assembly resolution 50/203, the Council adopted in its resolution 1996/6 a multi-year programme of work for the Commission covering the period 1997-2000 with a more focused and thematic approach, taking up a cluster of the critical areas of concern from the Beijing Platform for Action at each of its sessions.
