To address this situation, on 7 May 2009, the African Union Commission (AUC) launched the Campaign for Accelerated Reduction in Maternal Mortality in Africa (CARMMA), as an advocacy platform for enhanced implementation of the Maputo Plan of Action on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).

47. UNFPA Africa supports national authorities in partnering with religious and traditional organizations to launch at the national level the Campaign on Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa, an initiative of the African Union Commission supported by UNFPA to intensify implementation of the Maputo Plan of Action to reduce maternal mortality.

In particular, in May 2009 the African Union launched the Campaign on Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa (CARMMA) under the theme " Universal access to quality services: improve maternal, neonatal and child health " .

The Conference of Ministers called upon African countries to: strengthen their statistical systems and institutions and implement the Strategy for the Harmonization of Statistics in Africa; explore innovative ways of mobilizing funds to support Millennium Development Goals-related programmes and activities; and support the Campaign for Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa.
