He also welcomed the adoption of General Assembly resolution 51/218 E, which contained provisions on uniform death and disability compensation for troops, and Security Council resolution 1121 (1997) instituting the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal. Each of those resolutions in its own way paid homage to those who had laid down their lives while serving the United Nations.

Mr. Assaf (Lebanon), speaking in exercise of the right of reply, said he first wished to express appreciation for the efforts of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, in particular for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), countries which had contributed troops to that operation and the 244 peacekeepers who had lost their lives during that mission.
