Mrs. EGESBORG-HANSEN (Denmark), speaking on behalf of the Nordic countries, which had consistently worked for better coordination of the activities of the United Nations system, said that they welcomed the concept of the integrated approach that had guided the establishment of the interim offices in seven countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

83. Mr. HUSLID (Norway), speaking on behalf of the Nordic countries, welcomed the progress made on the implementation of General Assembly resolution 47/199, which was a most useful instrument for improving the quality of United Nations development cooperation at the field level.

Mr. BIØRN LIAN (Norway), speaking on behalf of the Nordic countries, said that those countries had confirmed their support for the adoption of a code of crimes against the peace and security of mankind but pointed out certain difficulties with respect to questions of principle as well as drafting.

1. Mr. Longva (Norway), speaking on behalf of the Nordic countries, said that those countries agreed with the Commission that diplomatic protection was a topic of great practical significance which was ripe for codification and on which there was already a sound body of legislation.

16. Mr. Fife (Norway), speaking on behalf of the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Sweden and Norway) said that the end result of the Commission's work on diplomatic protection struck a good balance between codification and the progressive development of international law.

Mr. Lidén (Sweden), speaking on behalf of the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden), said that the Geneva Conventions had achieved universal recognition as the principal legal basis for protection of persons in armed conflict, but much remained to be done in order to achieve universal compliance with the rules contained in them.

Ms. Nilsson (Sweden), introducing the draft resolution on behalf of the Nordic countries Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway and the other sponsors, said that Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Chile, Greece, Honduras, Mexico, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Uruguay had joined the sponsors.
