5. A number of recent events and actions taken in intergovernmental bodies now provide a solid basis for systematic cooperation between the Division for the Advancement of Women and the Centre for Human Rights.

2. The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action 3/ also called for improved cooperation between the Division for the Advancement of Women and the Centre for Human Rights (para. 231(g)) as an element in mainstreaming the human rights of women.

The Division for the Advancement of Women and the Centre for Human Rights cooperated closely during the first session of the open-ended working group on the elaboration of a draft optional protocol to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, held during the fortieth session of the Commission on the Status of Women in March 1996.
