74. Article 133 of Act No. 91 of 1959, as amended by Legislative Decree No. 46 of 1968 and Legislative Decree No. 6 of 6 August 1984, stipulates as follows:

In accordance with the Syrian Penal Code promulgated by Legislative Decree No. 140 of 22 June 1949, as amended, abortion is prohibited. Articles 522 to 523 of the Code are devoted to the subject of contraceptive methods and abortion.

To enshrine these principles the Law of Local Government was issued under cover of Legislative Decree No. 15 of 11 May 1971 providing for, inter alia:

136. The Judicial Authority Law issued under Legislative Decree No. 98 in 1961 (see annex 25) does not discriminate between men and women. Women may hold positions in the judiciary just as men do, inasmuch as the aforementioned decree does not require a judge to be a male. Women are subject to the same terms of appointment, promotion and compensation and have the same rights and duties as men.
136- ولم يميز قانون السلطة القضائية الصادر بالمرسوم التشريعي رقم 98 لعام ١٩٦١، (انظر الملحق رقم 25)، بـين النسـاء والرجال وتسـتطيع المرأة تولي القضـاء مثلـها مثـل الرجـل، إذ لم يحدد هذا المرسوم شرطاً أن يكون القاضي ذكراً، وتخضع للشـروط نفسـها في التعيين والترقيـة والتعويض وكل الحقوق والواجبات.
