My delegation would like to express its appreciation to the Secretary-General for his report concerning financial intermediation in Africa, which is contained in document A/50/490.

Consideration of this issue is continuing in the follow-up meetings to the Tokyo Conference, and we hope that, along with the Secretary-General's report, the conclusions reached there will contribute to promoting financial intermediation in Africa.

As regards the latter, a programme of action for advancing financial intermediation in Africa was adopted in May 1998 in Mauritius by a high-level workshop organized by the Office of the Special Coordinator for Africa and the Least Developed Countries.

On another subject, my delegation fully supports the proposals relating to advancing financial intermediation in Africa, as this is a way to strengthen local savings structures and to link them with modern banks and financial institutions, with a view to generating local resources at this time when official development assistance is dwindling at an unprecedented rate.
وإذ أنتقل إلى موضوع آخر، يؤيد وفدي تأييدا كاملا المقترحات المتصلة بالنهوض بالوساطة المالية في أفريقيا، حيث أن هذا سبيل لتعزيز هياكل المدخرات المحلية والربط بينها وبين المصارف الحديثة والمؤسسات المالية، بغية توليد موارد محلية وبخاصة في هذا الوقت الذي تتناقص فيه المساعدة اﻹنمائية الرسمية بمعدل لم يسبق له مثيل.

The OAU secretariat also participated in a number of activities and workshops organized or co-organized by the Office of the Special Coordinator for Africa and the Least Developed Countries, including the Asia-Africa Workshop on Advancing financial intermediation in Africa (Mauritius, April 1998) and the International Task Force on Informal Sector Development in Africa.
٧١ - واشتركت أيضا اﻷمانة العامة لمنظمة الوحدة اﻷفريقية في عدد من اﻷنشطة وحلقات العمل التي تولى مكتب المنسق الخاص تنظيمها أو شاركها في تنظيمها، بما في ذلك حلقة آسيا وأفريقيا بشأن النهوض بالوساطة المالية في أفريقيا )موريشيوس، نيسان/أبريل ١٩٩٨( وفرقة العمل المعنية بتنمية القطاع غير الرسمي في أفريقيا.

(b) Review and give priority to recommendations of the Secretary-General contained in his report entitled " Towards advancing financial intermediation in Africa " (A/50/490) through cooperation among the United Nations organizations, the Bretton Woods institutions, the African Development Bank and relevant subregional organizations in organizing subregional consultations involving African policy and decision makers in financial intermediation.
