He was a man of peace who spent his life defending and promoting freedom, justice, independence and equality for all people of all races and religions.

Ms. Barghouti (Observer for Palestine) said that it would not be easy for the Chairman to carry out his duties in the light of the deteriorating situation in the occupied Palestinian lands and the occupation in general; however, she was confident that, under his leadership, major successes would nonetheless be achieved with the full backing of his own and many other countries.
