The second regional seminar on traditional practices affecting the health of women and children was held at Colombo in July 1994.

The Centre for Human Rights, in cooperation with the Government of Burkina Faso, organized the first United Nations Regional Seminar on traditional practices affecting the health of Women and Children at Ouagadougou, from 29 April to 3 May 1991, the report of which is contained in document E/CN.4/Sub.2/1991/48.

One of the criticisms that the United Nations Regional Seminar on traditional practices affecting the health of Women and Children, which took place in Colombo in July 1994, made in this respect was levelled at selective abortion and the ever-growing number of clinics equipped with means for detecting the sex of the foetus in countries where there is an overriding preference for male children as in India, for example.
