Much of this phenomenon has followed from the almost universal adoption of export-oriented growth strategies during the 1980s and 1990s, which led the corporate sector in developing and transition economies to make decisions on wages and employment with reference to external demand and competition on global markets.

439. At its 29th meeting, held on 20 May 2011 (forty-sixth session) the Committee discussed and adopted a statement on the obligations of States parties regarding the corporate sector and economic, social and cultural rights.

20. There being no global repository of comprehensive, consistent, and impartial information, we cannot say with certainty whether abuses in relation to the corporate sector are increasing or decreasing over time, only that they are reported more extensively because more actors track them and transparency is greater than in the past.

The Working Group also takes note of the statement of the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights on the obligations of States parties to the Covenant regarding the corporate sector and economic, social and cultural rights, which references the due diligence dimension of the " Protect, Respect and Remedy " Framework; and notes that the Committee may decide to develop a general comment in the future.

During the current reporting period, the Committee adopted two statements, one on the obligations of States parties regarding the corporate sector and economic, social and cultural rights and the second on the importance and relevance of the right to development, adopted on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Declaration on the Rights to Development (see annex VI, section B, to the present report).

(i) The importance that States parties to the Covenant live up to their responsibility to ensure that the corporate sector observe the Rio principles as they bear on all the rights under the Covenant, as stressed by the Committee in its 2011 statement on the obligations of States parties regarding the corporate sector and economic, social and cultural rights (E/C.12/2011/1).
