Pursuant to that decision in November 1998, the General Assembly adopted resolution 53/78 A of 4 December 1998 by which the Assembly requested the Secretary-General and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to lend their support to the establishment of the centre.

2. One delegation, noting its initiative in adopting resolution 56/509, by which the Assembly decided to elect its Presidents at least three months in advance of the opening of each session, proposed that these three months should be used as productively as possible and that a lesson learned report should be handed over immediately after the election and a follow-up report from the outgoing President at the closing of the session.

At its 50th meeting, on 27 November, on the proposal of the Chairman, the Committee adopted, without a vote, a draft decision by which the General Assembly would take note of the report of the Secretary-General on rape and abuse of women in the areas of armed conflict in the former Yugoslavia (A/52/497) (see para. 45).

At the 52nd meeting, on 22 March, the Chairman of the Committee orally proposed a draft decision, by which the General Assembly would transmit the note by the Secretariat contained in document A/C.5/53/CRP.1/Rev.1 to the Committee for Programme and Coordination for consideration at its thirty-ninth session.
