22. The Committee underlines the importance of the mandate given to UNPREDEP under Security Council resolution 1186 (1998) to monitor and report on illicit arms flows and other activities that are prohibited under resolution 1160 (1998).

Furthermore, the Council sought to assess security challenges along the Ivorian border; to assess and encourage inter-mission cooperation between the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) and UNMIL; to focus on illicit weapons flows in the region and explore strengthening regional cooperation; and to emphasize the importance of protecting human rights and combating sexual and gender-based violence.

In addition, the Commission would like briefly to address the broader issue of illicit arms flows in the Great Lakes region in violation of Security Council resolutions already adopted, and in the light of the Council's recent adoption of resolution 1040 (1996), taking into account the fact that embargo-related measures will probably not be effective unless they are applied throughout the subregion.

The mission gathered information and data likely to improve understanding of the magnitude and scope of illicit trafficking in small arms and light weapons on the common borders of the three Mano River Union countries and elaborated on a project document which identified practical ways and activities to stem illicit weapons flows, consolidate peace and security in the three countries, as well as to promote arms control and practical disarmament.
