فكثيرة هي المجموعات من السكان الأصليين، من مثل سكان منطقة الكورديّيروس في الفلبين والكارنس والشانس في المرتفعات الجبلية في ميانمار والناغاس والميزوس وغيرها من المجموعات المقيمة في تريبورا والمناطق المتاخمة لبنغلاديش، التي تعاني من الاستبعاد والاضطهاد، في حين أن طوائف أخرى - أي المسيحيين والمسلمين والهندوس والبوذيين- تقع ضحية العنف بسبب العرق والدين أو الانتماء الإثني.
