It was also noted that the accession of all States in the region to the Non-Proliferation Treaty would contribute to the objective of establishing a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons as well as of other weapons of mass destruction.

This meeting, which immediately followed the Fourth Biennial Ministerial Meeting in support of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, heightened interest in the Treaty and further encouraged the adherence of all States of the region to the Treaty.

The European Union believes that the accession of all States in the region to the conventions banning chemical and biological weapons and to the NPT would make an essential and extremely significant contribution to peace and to regional and global security.

In this regard, Ukraine believes that accession by all the States of the region to the international agreements on nuclear non-proliferation and the elimination of weapons of mass destruction remains of paramount importance for the peace process in the Middle East.
